JALISCO, MEXICO (August 13, 2015) – FabriTec Structures, North America’s leading design/build contractor specializing in tension fabric structures, continues to develop its strong presence in Latin America with their latest shopping center project located in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Urban Center is a successful Mexican shopping center brand with six locations in four cities. The key to their success is their carefully planned locations, the quality of their architecture, and the combination of shopping and entertainment spaces.
Located in the south of the city, which has recently become an important residential and commercial center, Urban Center La Rioja was conceived to become a landmark of the area.
FabriTec, in collaboration with prestigious Architect/Developer Central de Arquitectura, has designed an extraordinary structure that rises 46 feet above the ground level. The suspended roof is supported by six 80-meter-high masts. From the top of the masts, a series of steel cables provide stability to the fabric roof and connects it with the building. The use of cables allowed FabriTec engineers to reduce the size of the steel members that support the structure; the result is a structure that can cover a 138 feet long with thinly rolled steel beams. The structure is located in the main atrium of the shopping center.
The TEFLON™ coated fabric roof (PTFE) is lightweight and translucent, letting natural light in but blocking the heat of the warm Guadalajara weather. In addition, it protects the main atrium from rain, as Guadalajara has a three-month long rainy season in the summer.
Urban Center La Rioja is currently under construction by Central de Arquitectura. Fabrication of the steel structure and the membrane will begin by the end of April and will conclude by the end of the summer. The complex is scheduled to open to the public in November of 2015.
